Door glass changes daylight, views, privacy, and the character of an entrance. Choose it by position and use rather than appearance alone. The final glass type, thickness, safety classification, energy performance, and other project requirements must be confirmed for the actual specification.
Map light and views
Stand inside and outside the proposed entrance at different times of day. Note where daylight is useful and where direct sightlines should be reduced. A transom, sidelight, and glazed door panel each sit at a different eye level.
Clear, textured, and obscured appearances
Clear glass provides the strongest view. Textured or obscured glass scatters the image to different degrees. Frosted appearances can provide visual screening, but generic labels do not define exact privacy or technical performance. Request samples or manufacturer information for available options.
Privacy changes at night
When the interior is brighter than the exterior, silhouettes and movement may be more visible. Assess samples under realistic lighting and consider blinds, screens, landscaping, or glass placement where appropriate.
Glass in the door leaf
Glass within the leaf can form a focal panel or narrow vertical insert. Review its position relative to eye level, handle, panel layout, and carving. Ask how the glass is retained and what replacement access exists.
Sidelights
Sidelights increase daylight and widen the entrance composition. One side can target a specific area; two sides create symmetry. Confirm each glass width after frame members are considered.
Transoms
A transom can bring light above direct eye level. Its divisions should be coordinated with the door and sidelights below. Record the complete opening height.

- What safety specification applies?
- Is insulated glazing required or available?
- Are there energy, bushfire, acoustic, security, or other project requirements?
- Who confirms compliance for the project location?
Cleaning and maintenance
Consider access to both sides, textured surfaces, coastal or dusty conditions, and the finish around the glass. Follow the supplied cleaning guidance and avoid products that may damage coatings, seals, or wood finish.
Glass selection checklist
Mark every glass panel on an elevation, state the desired privacy direction, request available samples and specifications, confirm included components, and review the result with the complete door configuration.
